Asexuality has evolved many times in planarians, but its genomic basis is unknown. This study shows that in the species S. mediterranea, a series of chromosomal rearrangements in a sexual ancestor suppressed recombination genome-wide, followed by the emergence of asexual reproduction with surprisingly little mutational cost so far.
